Phony lawyers calling themselves notarios continue to scam unsuspecting immigrants

EL PASO — A “Now Renting” sign and an empty office is all Irma Castañeda found when she went to ask her immigration attorney how her deferred action petition was proceeding. She had paid the man who turned out not to be a lawyer at all $2000 to solve her immigration problem.

Had the scam never happened, Castañeda would be done with her deferred action process. In the meantime, she is not allowed to work and she is desperate because her husband was deported recently, the house he started to build for them at Horizon City is unfinished, and she cannot feed or provide any comfort to her two daughters — Rosalva, 12, and Jackeline, 9, who was born with a developmental disability.

According to immigrant advocates, individuals setting up phony legal offices on the bilingual U.S.-Mexico border are taking advantage of the frequent confusion between the term notario público understood to usually denote a lawyer in Mexico and notary public, which in the U.S. is a person with no legal training, with the very limited legal authority of a licensed notary public to basically attest to the validity of a signature on a document for a $6 fee.

As a consequence, this misconception often leads to cases of immigrants becoming victims of extortion from shady individuals passing themselves off as immigration attorneys.

“Undocumented immigrants are in desperate situations and…

‘F*** This’: Atheist Outraged After Claiming Notary Refused Her Service – But the Bank Has a Different Story

March 28th, 2014 No comments

An atheist activist is claiming that a notary at a TD Bank branch in New Jersey refused her request to authenticate documents, because she’s a nonbeliever — but a spokeswoman for the bank has an entirely different story.

“I was just refused service — because I am an atheist,” American Atheists managing director Amanda Knief wrote on the organization’s Facebook page Tuesday. “It was embarrassing, humiliating, and pissed me off.”

Knief said that she went to her local TD Bank to have documents notarized, but that the notary asked for an explanation of the papers in question.

“The documents were charitable organizations registrations for American Atheists in several states. So I told her what AA is about,” Knief explained. “She looked down, then looked at me and [American Atheists President] Dave Silverman and said she couldn’t sign the documents because of ‘personal reasons’ and went to find another notary who was eating his lunch to come do the authentications.”

Notaries investigated after Action 9 report

Dozens of notaries are now being investigated after an Action 9 investigation exposed their criminal histories. We found convicted con men and thieves still had state licenses to notarize legal documents.

Surveillance cameras helped investigators build a case against Ricky Collins, who was found guilty of a yearlong burglary spree through tourist hotels.  But Action 9 discovered he was still licensed by Florida to notarize legal documents.

Collins was one of 400 felons our investigation exposed who remained licensed notaries.

Friend Verne Harnish has a global pulse on the ‘what, when and who’ is happening in the business world, focusing primarily on young growing companies and entrepreneurs. I met Verne more than a decade at a CEO club meeting, bought his book, Mastering the Rockefeller Habits and have been a true fan and follower ever since. Here’s a quick bio:

Verne is founder of the world-renowned Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) and chaired for fifteen years EO’s premiere CEO program, the “Birthing of Giants,” and WEO’s “Advanced Business” executive program, both held at MIT.  Founder and CEO of Gazelles, a global executive education and coaching company, Verne has spent the past 29 years educating entrepreneurial teams.

The “Growth Guy” syndicated columnist, Verne is also the Venture Columnist for Fortune magazine, author of “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits: What You Must Do to Increase the Value of Your Growing Firm,” and Co-author of “The Greatest Business Decisions of All Time: How Apple, Ford, IBM, Zappos, and others made radical choices that changed the course of business.”

We reconnected recently and, although most in my network follow Verne, I thought we would let the secret out so you can follow his sage advice as well. Here is a copy of his latest Vernes Insight

Fat Friday’s ?

March 4th, 2014 No comments

Ok maybe we are onto something big and, if so, you heard it here first, a brand new National  holiday ‘Fat Friday’s’. Like most genius inventions it all starts with that ‘aha’ moment.

Perhaps it’s just me and my small circle of friends but has anyone noticed that Fat Tuesday actually starts on ‘Fat Friday’ – Jerry Seinfeld could do an entire show/series around this, I can feel it-send royalty check to…(Or better yet, my friend Karen who is a brilliant stand-up comedian-this could actually launch her Int’l career- do I hear 15% management fee?) For my non-practicing friends,  Lent will begin on Wed and for 4o days Christians will be making a painful sacrifice, most commonly referred as ‘giving up’ something that one  normally could not live without i.e. cake, ice cream, pasta, bread, cigarettes/alcohol (although I have never heard of anyone even trying to attempt these),  etc. So, Fat Tuesday was ‘invented’ – granting the right to pig out – for lack of more eloquent prose- the night before you have to make this overwhelming 40 day commitment. The way I see it, a darn good excuse to really overindulge,  end up in some sort of coma for a month,  so when you come out it you really didn’t miss much, then you can start where you left off.. Anyway, you get the picture..

And no, I don’t recall anyone getting a head start in past years by beginning the ‘fat’ celebration the Friday before Ash Wednesday but my inner circle has really embraced this concept – ok, at my age maybe I don’t remember that this has been going on for centuries-so sue me if I didn’t think of it first.

I recently learned some things that may also convince you that we are onto something huge – one friend, from another  side of the planet (South Africa), actually starts off Fat Tuesday with pancakes-genius! Why not Fat Friday Pancake Day or Fat Friday Pancake Street Festival-I know you’ll  buy tickets? Syrups from all over the World..okay stop!

Then. what really prompted this brilliance, was a call from the in-laws in NY on Monday (what do you think of Fat Monday?), “guess what’s happening at the local French Bakery, I don’t know what- there have been lines around the block for the entire day – just to savor that last piece of pastry that you won’t enjoy for what seems like the rest of your life!” (not kidding 40 days is brutal)

Okay, so maybe we didn’t think of this first but I still want proof-scour your sources and send me a legitimate Fat Friday advertisement and if not, just send the check! Happy Easter.. Oh, just in case you run out of ideas on how to best gouge yourself today:
